The art of making: KROTS2 'Zu Jeder Stund En Vogelgsang'
hey there, sascha here. we wanted to give you the opportunity to have a look behind the curtains of how the limited edition prints you’ve received were made. from first ideas, digital mockups, discarded ideas through to the end results. do what you want with it, ignore it, love it or try it for yourself…
digital mockups. the album title “zu jeder stund ein vogelsang” combines two topics that i chose to try and have present in this series. firstly obviously birds and secondly the aspect of time. picking found bird feathers as the main subject of the images, and the choice of cyanotype as a photographic printing process that uses uv-light exposure that captures the essence of time, covers both these themes.
all feathers found in zurich city, except the two top left, had them lying around.
first exposure test, just feathers. for a cyanotype to work, you mix two chemicals that create a photosensitive solution that turns blue when exposed to light. so it’s practically like black and white photography but its blue and white. the great thing about cyanotypes is you can use it on pretty much any absorbent material.
second test. only feathers was a little bit plain so adding some soap bubbles and cellophane to break the light and create some depth and movement in the image.
high volume production ;-) no two prints are alike.
removing feathers & cellophane after exposure
developing image & neutralising chemicals with cold tap water
drying prints
messy pile of prints before being pressed flat
this is just one of the 70 unique prints each of you #VINYLKLUB members has… enjoy!
