The art of making: KROTS1 'Gold'
hey there, sascha here. we wanted to give you the opportunity to have a look behind the curtains of how the limited edition prints you’ve received were made. from first ideas, digital mockups, discarded ideas through to the mostly hand made end results. do what you want with it, ignore it, love it or try it for yourself…
first quick idea sketch drawn on iphone. pretty much stuck to the initial layout… what’s it about? well anna said it best: gold
digital mock up simulating riso printing with color overlay, imprecise registration and faked gold foil stamp
color separation for risograph. used to make individual ink stencils (masters) for each print color. bright red (left) and risofederal blue (right).
once everything is prepped, a risograph is cheap and extremely fast for making multiple copies. but being designed as an office copy machine there are very many imperfections which is the nice part about it. embrace the imperfect! printed on laid paper.
adding the gold hot foil stamp using a self cut aluminum die in a heated press
with risograph inks being vegetable-oil based and not completely self-drying, there is a risk of smudging when not handled carefully so we folded the print it to a translucent glassine paper as a protective envelope. love the matte look and the surprise of the shiny gold when opened.
don’t burn yourself with a mouthful of gold
thanks so much to piär amrein for the support!
