Flash track of the day: Sun Kil Moon 'Birds Of Flims'
Sun Kil Moon - Universal Themes (2015)
"How the hell did I end up playing myself in an Italian film, set in a ski town in Switzerland?"
If you are a little familiar with Mark Kozelek's work, you know that this man is a master of self-reflection, asking many questions and setting uninterrupted streams of consciousness to music. I love his observations of everyday life and his small and big thoughts on various topics of his life.
Place of the event in the song ‘Birds of Flims’, from which the quote at the beginning of this text comes, is a venerable hotel in the small mountain village Flims in the Swiss Alps, which I know quite well by some holidays myself. Mark Kozelek took part in a film by the great director Paolo Sorrentino called ‘Youth’ and I was very happy when I heard about it. When he also made this contemplative place the subject of one of his songs, I was absolutely delighted. Of course, when you live in New York, naming your city in a pop-cultural context is no longer an excitement, but when it comes to a small town in Switzerland, this is very special. 😍
Anyway, this little story contributes to the fact that I like this record very much. And I can also recommend Paolo Sorrentino's films to you. Great cinematographic art - above all the masterpiece ‘La Grande Bellezza’.
